WAK5 ... and mobile strategy

I have the feeling that Wakanda is not ready for the go live of WAK5. In the last month, there is no progress in the forum, WAK5 has many issues and generally I am afraid that the project does not grows up compare before of 6 months. Of course, this is my personal opinion. From my experience, the main huge issue is the delay of application loading and no progress of new widgets. In the other, noSQL database has a lot of good functionality (see the previous ten years experience from 4D). I believe, that the strategy needs some changes. Wakanda needs to give more time on Android and IOS applications and forget HTML2. There is a gap there. Move your wonderful noSQL database to run on Android and IOS locally, make synchronazion to central database, run javascript compiler locally on mobile devices....and native widgets. The world is moving to mobile devices and we need to support them.

Wakanda installation on webfaction server

It appears the installation of Wakanda is not straightforward on CentOS Linux, which is the operating system on our servers. Please refer to the following infos:

According to the system requirements on Wakanda's download page, they are providing a binary distribution that requires "Linux Ubuntu distribution (LTS) 10.4 or above". So, what's probably happening is that the binary requires libbsd.so.0 and CentOS doesn't provide it.

It turns out I'm running Xubuntu 12.04 locally, so I tried running it on my local machine, and it works; it's using /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libbsd.so.0`.

This is essentially why on Windows and Mac you see so many binary distributions of software, but on Linux, source distributions of software are more popular. Linux itself is a kernel, and different operating systems will have different libraries, so you either have to (1) make many binary software downloads, (2) choose to support only one or two operating systems, or (3) just distribute the source code instead. Most people opt for (3).

Wakanda does have source code on its github page, but doesn't seem to offer much in the way of a single tarball with a simple build process.

As an aside, the most popular operating system for application servers is RedHat Enterprise Linux (or, similarly, CentOS), so it would be somewhat expected that if Wakanda was providing binary executables for Linux, they would at least provide one for the latest stable RHEL. But, they don't.

What can be done? I haven't tried it for Wakanda, but I bet you could get it running by copying all of the necessary libraries to something like $HOME/lib/ubuntu_libs, and then export LD_LIBRARY_PATH="$HOME/lib/ubuntu_libs" . Something like patchelf might work as an export replacement, by modifying the ELF binary's internal rpath.

I'm an end user of OS so I didn't know linux, someone can help me in installing wakanda there?

Hello Wak Team;

During my app development in Wak3, the major reason I had to stop, was because the studio could simply not handle any page that had many and complex layout and widgets, in particular the "Tab" widgets with 10 pages and each with many combo boxes.
I had provided lots of info to team regarding these memory leaks, especially when widgets were being moved around and studio would crash. By then, I had reached the limit and that was only 20% of my project.

My question to team is, have you fixed all these memory leaks? and secondly, I don't see the Tab widget is being re-written in the Roadmap. What's the story with the status of Tab Widget?

I need to start planning when I can re-start from ground up again, but with the assurance that Studio is working now.

webComponent cleanup

If you need to do any cleanup when a webComponent is removed you may want to use an approach like this. I need to do cleanup because I use events and listeners for some communication between components and pages and need to make sure they get cleaned up when the component is removed.

I add a function to the widget prototype and call it instead of removeComponent. It looks to see if the component has a cleanup function and calls it if so. Then calls the normal removeComponent function. I define the cleanup function this.cleanup = function(){...}; below the this.load(... function.

The text that is auto-filled ("ited Arab Emirates" in the example) doesn't have to be styled differently. It could just be selected so it is changed as the user continues to type.

new event: allSourcesReady

When a page is loaded for the first time the sources are not yet ready because in some cases the initial query or the order by will take some time.

Therefore initial code which is working with sources fails when they are not yet ready.

It would be nice to have a page event "allSourcesReady" which is triggered when the initial query for all sources is done and the sources are ready to be used.

Hosted Questionaire with Skip Logic

Hey there Wakanda Forum,

I'm looking to develop a questionnaire that I can host and have skip logic (or conditional questions) involved. I know that SurveyMonkey can do it, but I need to host this myself because I will have to eventually run private instances (different Wakanda Servers) for a few large select clients (where each project will have it's own questionnaire.

My goals are the following:

- Have pages with 5 to 15 questions. When the user clicks Submit & Next, the next set of questions (5 to 15) are selection based on the answers of the first set.

- Users will only have access to their questionnaire (per client, then per project).

- Once complete and submitted, a report of the answered questions will generated as PDF, automatically emailed to a predetermined email.

- Analytical reports can be run across all answers, broken down by Client, Project, etc. To determine trends within the data.

- I will have a default set of questions, but then I need to be able to add/delete based on the individual client and/or project. I'd like to be able to add/delete groups of questions (not have to do it individually).

Any thoughts? Is this something that can be easily accomplished in Wakanda? Suggestions?

Handler is not a function error

I got this error on MacOS X 10.8.4, Wakanda v5 build 5.135161 (64 bit)
The same solution has no problem on Windows 7 64 bit (using same build of wakanda).

What are the issues related to using Wakanda in Microsoft's world

While the title may insinuate that I am asking for troubles, that is not the case. I am quite impressed with Wakanda as likely the best environment for development of sophisticated JavaScript applications. At the same time all my clients are firmly attached to Microsoft's "stack" (ASP.NET MVC / HTML5 / IIS / Azure).

So, my question is simply this: assuming that I can prove to my clients the technical prowess of Wakanda, what kind of problems can I run into while developing parts of my solutions in Wakanda. As an example, I will use our Health Record Bank application which is ASP.NET Web Forms app, using Microsoft's HealthVault as data storage with an intermediate SQL database which being bidirectionally synced with HealthVault acts as a proxy that eliminates the network latency issues.

The same question stated differently: would I be better off extending my solution by using a more MS centric approach like KendoUI, or would Wakanda offer equally good services in my situation?

removeComponent event

I would find it very helpful for an event to be sent to a webComponent that is loaded into a component widget that it is about to be removed. There is often cleanup activity that I would like to do. I know this is not all that easy to do, but maybe instead of an event, the code in the webComponent can call a function in the this.load function of the webComponent that can pass a callback function that removeComponent would call to give the webComponent a chance to do cleanup that isn't handled by the generic removeComponent function?

Invert selection & remove selected from entity collection

1. Invert selection in a datagrid
If I want to select all entities except for a few, I usually select those few rows, that I don't want, and use an invert selection function. What's the best way to do this in a datagrid?

2. Remove selected rows from current collection
With reduceToSelected() I can get an entity collection with only the selected rows.
How can I invert this, ie. get an entity collection based on the current collection but without the selected rows?

I have created a module that uses underscore to generate pages/scripts from the server.

I have published a demo solution to github

This is how to use the demo:

Clone the solution from github or just download it and open it with wakanda
Run the file "_tmp/fill.js" to generate the data
Run the "runMe.js"
And finally, open this url: http://localhost:8081/pages/page.ssjs

Notice that the file "page.ssjs" does not exist in the webFolder (It's in the Templates folder!), and the content of that file, is simply an underscore template that is executed in the server side:

The "ssjs" module gives direct access to http request and response objects.

Create a new solution.
Create a new datastore class, add a storage attribute "date" of type date.
Add a public class method as follows:

Add a matrix widget and drag the DataClass1 datasource onto widget.
Run solution.
Get a blank screen (neither button not matrix widget displays). Error in Chrome/Firefox debugger: "Uncaught ReferenceError: e is not defined"

If you change the type of the attribute from date to string, and change the method appropriately, e.g.,

the problem does not arise (button works as expected, matrix updates as expected).

Tested with Wak 4.132351 64bit. The behavior does not arise in Wak 5.134039 64 bit, but the Matrix widget in that build has bigger problems.

Rounding feature for Numbers in text Widget

Scenario: Number - 41.97 (context is that this is a % value)
Display the number on a page in a text (or text input) widget, rounded to 1 decimal place (42.0 %).
Apply the format: ##.# %
The number is not rounded up.

Opportunity: remove unnecessary manual coding at display time by providing a Rounding capability in the Widget properties.

Question about the Wak5 Matrix widget

In Wak4 when you dragged a datasource (pointing to a datastore class on the server) onto a matrix, you got the matrix autofilled with Text fields.

In Wak5 when you drag a datasource onto a matrix you get a bunch of little pseudo-grids, complete with title and navigation bar? (Why? And is the documentation to be updated soon?)

If i remove the component the page load correctly (on both wakanda and browser)...

It's been almost 4 months of works and this evening it's like I have nothing... :RpS_crying:

I've looked many others thread on the wakanda's forum but nothing who can help me...

with the v4 of wakanda, all my images have vanished (there are at the same place, in wakanda, the link is still good, but they aren't displayed...
So I have uninstal wakanda v4 for re-install the v3...

if the images are back, the other error are still here :(
after some time I have found that apparently it's one of the grids inside the coponent who cause the bug, but my problem is that yesterday my grid was working correctly...

and an other problem appear: the index.js of my index is not loading, in the browser it return a 404 error, but he is at the right place and is included in the index.html properties....

WAK5 studio page right pane bug?

When I open a .waPage file, the right pane shows the Properties, but the other tabs (events, styles, etc.) do not function. When I click on them, nothing changes on the right pane. And without access to those tabs, there's not much else I can do. I've tried quitting and reopening, different pages, but still no luck. I haven't tried a new project, just an existing WAK4 project, so maybe that's a factor.

I'm using a Mac and the first stabilization build for WAK5. I'd send you the troubleshooting page, but that's not working for me either. Sigh. Thx,

I am very new to wakanda but I am very experienced in IDEs, tools, languages, javascript, etc., so conceptually I felt right at home with wakanda from the very first moment. Wakanda's paradigm is wicked cool. Well done.

However, as incredibly powerful and agile wakanda is conceptually, I am encountering so many bugs and quirks that within one day I started to question whether I should use it.

To be fair I am using the dev release (downloaded yesterday). So, this might explain the quirks - they are in a number of different categories:

1) ds.Airport.find and ds.Airport.query don't consistently work. something as simple as ds.Airport.find("Code = :1","BED") pulls data only sometimes.
2) the google map is quirky - the zoom and pan work only sometimes
3) Saving a file sometimes doesn't update the rendered html
4) The server side debugger is flaky - it gets stuck and doesn't update the code when the code is changed.
5) The UI designer is very flaky - I click items on the designer surface and sometimes I just can't select something.
6) Grid column before and after vertical separators do not align with the ones in the rows.
7) There are some small pauses in responding to clicks in the designer. It makes the developement process feel slow.
8) I am not seeing intellisense in the editor. This is a huge loss for me as this how I quickly learn things.

The list goes on and on. In all fairness - what I was able to accomplish in half a day is pretty incredible. I loaded airport data from the FAA with lats and longs and built a great circle distance calculator which in a class method returns airports within a certain radius distance of a given/selected airport. The results are displayed in a grid and mapped on the google map. The javascript method for the distance calculator runs in a serverside where clause and runs in under a second for 20,000 records. Nice!

The taste I got from wakanda is delicious, but I am torn about the productivity thing given so many issues.
Can this have to do with me using the v5 dev build?

Please help me understand if I am doing something wrong. I am willing to send my project to a wakanda employee in a private message...

How do I stop a running script?

As in the instructions for importing data I have a script that parses line by line an import file.

As I am doing quick prototyping, I notice things that are wrong in the script (like misaligned columns etc) and want to stop the script and re-run it.

Firstly, I can't figure out what UI action stops the script (it opens chrome in debug mode which is great but how do I stop this script?).

I have tried just closing chrome and then re-running the script but the execution (breakpoint) is right where the script left before closing the browser. As I fiddle around with pressing the Stop Server button, etc., I am getting "Errors occured while stopping Wakanda Sever with the Test Solution" type of errors.

What am I doing wrong?

Also - how would I go about making the script work with parameters (almost like command line parameters). In the import scenarios, for example, I would want a parameter to indicate whether the delete all records first or just overlay updated records...

Adding onRowDraw listener on dynamically created grid

Hi,

I am creating a grid dynamically in code and I want to have code run using the onRowDraw event. My problem is that the datasource is defined when creating the grid and the rows are all drawn before the onRowDraw event is defined. Can someone tell me how to A) assign the datasource (and columns) after the event is defined, and then draw the grid rows, or B) just refresh the grid to redraw all the rows after defining the event.

Can the journal file be backed with Volume Shadow Services while wakanda app is running without performance degradation?

Can the journal file be backed with Volume Shadow Services while wakanda app is running without considerable performance degradation?

I am asking this because this would allow a single data file backup for the day and regular (every x hours or x minutes) backup of the journal file during the day for differential data during the day...

Also, can a data, model and journal files be xcopy deployed? Meaning, can I take a full live production copy of those files (while the site is running) and copy them in to a dev environment to get an up to date snapshot of the production site for development and debugging purposes?

Socket programming

I use the socket for the first time, so I do a basic test about the communication between server and client socket(in the same host, which is localhost).
Here are my codes,

Production / Test Environment

I have been using Wakanda for a few months now and may be getting to a point where I am going to put out our first "live" application. To date I have been doing all of my development on the local machine and running the server on the local machine as well. What are people using for the workflow (I have minimal git experience)?

Here are the issues I am trying to resolve:

1. All my development has been on a 64 bit Windows 7 system. Production will be a Linux based server running on one of our virtual servers. Can I just expect everything to work as it has to this point? At one point I believe the Linux Wakanda server did not have full support as the other OS'es did.

2. How to I do the initial publishing of the system from my development machine to the server?

3. Ongoing, how do I work on changes locally with a local model and then only push out the changes to the live box. Cannot obviously work directly on live as there will be people using it and sometimes (or maybe more than sometimes) I like to break / refactor things.

Other ideas on making the production / development cycle more smooth and seamless?

Comingle external ui component witn wakanda ui

If I wanted to add, for example, a wijmo widget in to a wakanda ui page...

a) Is it possible to place it in to a wakanda container or arbitrary div. Can I add custom html to wakanda pages?
b) how do I add the external js and css files
c) what happens when wakanda resizes the page or containing div
d) can I still work inside wakanda (I probably would not see the widget until I run the page - this is fine)
e) how do I pass data from the datasource to the widget (I am ok with brute force iteration for now)
f) is there a video or tutorial for this - looked but didn't see anything

Data grouping by multiple fields

I am considering replacing an Asp.Net MVC sytem that uses WebApi and hence has fantastic support for rest based querying of data sources. I am fairly sure wakanda matches most of the functionality except for two areas that I haven't seen mentioned:
1) Queries that group data by multiple fields (and sort by the grouped field) and potentially run aggregate functions on the groups.
2) Defining url route patterns that map to different restful queries.

Are these possible? 2) is nice to have and it's absence is not a big problem for me, but 1) is fairly important.

I am considering using wakanda in a brand new project but have the following questions/concerns - would somebody be kind enough to answer them?:

1) The Current User/Group architecture: Can the user and group entities be extended with additional properties? Can the current user and group entities be linked to other entitites as object properties in the ER designer?

2) Can one use an outside social login service like janrain to do the authentication and tell wakanda that a user has been authenticated (and should become the current user)? The way this would work is a client side javascript component provided by janrain would invoke the social service's login, this would trigger a server side callback in wakanda - there would be enough info at this point to lookup the successfully authenticated user in wakanda and assume it is logged in (but on the server side) and set the current session user to it.

3) Can most of the ui be built with components like wijmo by using wakanda as a datastore and initializing knockout observables with the returned data?

4) Is there a way to parse xml returned from external web services on the server side.

5) Is there a solution to pub/sub like real-time communication between and server and client right now (possibly through other nodejs components)?

6) When is the mysql version of the entity relationship designer coming out? I want the same restful data querying and client side api story going against the same type of ER diagrammed data model, but with the physical implementation of the data model being in mysql.

7) Is there a multi-server load balancing/fault-tolerance story yet?

8) Is the current dev channel (as of 05-28-2013) basically the v5 in the roadmap? When is v5 scheduled for and when is v6 scheduled for?

9) If I had a history of 500 million vehicle position history records and wanted to query the database with a query that semantically equated to: "Get me all the type x vehicles that were within 50 mile radius of city y as of datetime xyz". Such a query would have nuances of doing a query with a where clause based on a computed scalar function (defined in javascript on the server side data model by me) that tells you whether vehicle position is within 50 miles of city y position and further constrains that by a time and vehicle characteristics. Is it possible? How would it perform?

10) If I wanted to build a Single Page Application where any relevant UI state has a matching hashtag url parameter: I know how to do this in a plain javascript SPA with a toolkit like sammy.js. How do I do this in wakanda - preferably can I use sammy js as the dispatcher of hashtag routes which then set the state of the UI?

I am new to Wakanda, but see some potential. I am not a professional developer but have been working on software projects off and on for 20 years. I have a few software projects in mind I would like to tackle and am looking for the right tool. In my search Wakanda is an option and so I have been reading up on it the last few days to learn more about it, but definitely see some weaknesses that will prevent me from using it. All have been mentioned before but here goes anyway.

Reporting - Need to have a report writer. Need a way to get info out of database.
SQL connectors - have to be able to connect to and manipulate SQL databases. Ideally be able to connect and manipulate data in javascript similar to way access data in own NoSQL database.
3rd party widget integration - need to be able to extend UI with 3rd party widgets

There are other things of course (data broadcasting(web sockets would make this more efficient), plug-in architecture) but these are the things higher on my list. I have been using Servoy some and it has some great features but drawbacks. Poor/sparse documentation and poor ui widgets to name two. But my primary issue is cost. Anywhere from 200 - 300+ per concurrent client seat based on volume. Ouch. And I flat could not get a quote in writing on pricing from the Servoy sales people. But their application server is "free". :RpS_smile: .

I would very much like to move away from it to something else. From what I have seen Wakanda has the potential to blow past Servoy in the next year or two.

Keep up the good work. I'll check back periodically to see if these issues are addressed and whats new.

event invalid on widget?

I feel fairly strange about WAF. I failed to make several widget events works every time, but others work. I think it doesn't make sense. The debug simply don't go the event method. Is that a bug in widget? or something I missed caring about, such as the position of code or conflicts? Hope someone experienced can do me a favor. This kind of problems really drive me crazy.

Deploying server to Ubuntu and don't run Wakanda server as root

However both guides start Wakanda server with root user. I would like to use another admin user to run the server with:

su -c '/home/wakandauser/wakanda/bin/wakanda /home/wakandauser/wakanda/Server/ServerSolution/Server.waSolution' wakandauser &

After creating 'wakandauser' as another admin user and running the above command Wakanda server starts but hangs after reporting that it listens to port 8081 for the first project. Solution log says that all projects and the solution were successfully started but server doesn't serve the page request and its memory usage is only 1/5th of the normal usage when server runs under the root user.

I don't want to be too long. Does somebody know how to run the Wakanda server under a dedicated user (not root)?

permissions for pages, files and folders

Help getting CORS working with waUpload

I am using the cors file by Choisel which works great. Now I would like to upload an image to the database however I am running into issues figuring out how to modify the cors file to enable file uploads.

I am submitting an ajax post request to this url http://127.0.0.1:8081/cors/waUpload/upload

And in the cors.js file I just look for the string upload in the request and if found modify the url for the XMLHttpRequest to http://127.0.0.1:8081/waUpload/upload. This does trigger the uploadHandlers.js file, but the request.body size is 0. I suspect this has something to do with the Headers, but not sure. I tried removing Content-Length from the headersBlackList in addition to other attempts to figure out how to get this working but I have not been successful.

Server hangs when loading project

I was working on a simple project, closed it, and when I reopened it a few minutes later, Wakanda Studio hangs if I try to load the project on the server. (All my other projects still load on the server just fine.)

Can anyone tell me what's going wrong? I've tried deleting the DataFolder and restarting my computer, but no dice. The same solution loads if I load it manually from the Server administration web interface.

Very strange about query on client-side

The thing is that I wanna achieve a shopping cart on client. every time the user click the '+' button, corresponding goods will be accumulated to the local entityCollection of datasource(named shop_cart which has datastore class defined on server,but normally I won't persist any data in it,because all operation on it will be on client).The left grid shown in the picture is bound to the Shop_cart datastore, just for testing use. Here is part of my code:

Regardless of the omitted part of code that I ensure there is nothing wrong and myshops is assigned, my problem is every time I click the add button, the event.entityCollection just show nothing, so every time it just add a new item, even if with the same item(in this case, I want them be accumulated, changes on the quantity attibute of shop_cart). The truth is myshops does have the same entities, but the query returns nothing,as displayed below:

Is there something I don't know clearly about the query method? Besides, I find difficulty telling the difference between entityCollection.query() and sources.datasource.query(), are they actually serve the same purpose?

I realized that maybe my description is not easy to understand, or if there is more easy ways to achieve my shop cart function as what I need, I will be very grateful for those options offered, because I don't even think my approach is a good one, and I got quite a few obstacles to do that.

question about query in client-side

It's not convenient to bring all my code here, and not very simple to describe the context.But I think there is just some conceptual questions bother me.
The setting is in client, when I do a query on the entityCollection of a bound datastore, I find the query is always based on all entities in datastore class. But I need a query always on current entitycollection in client-side, how can I achieve that? (there is no filterQuery() for entityCollection).
Another thing is about the filterQuery of datasource, how to retrieve the returning entityCollection in onSuccess method? Because the normal way event.entityCollection doesn't work, or specifically,there is no entitycollection in event. So how can I get the result?

Wakanda Image attribute -> Javascript Image Class

difference between datastore class method and RPC concerning entity collection

When I call Datastore class method I get an object (EntityCollection) but when I call RPC Module I get an Array!
The problem is that I can’t use this returned array in Client side with setEntityCollection API to refresh my Grid.

question about client-side callback function

This is about entityCollection.query() in client-side. Recently, when I use this function in my project, I feel very confused about the execution sequence of its callback function.As show below:

myShops is an entityCollection, and it does contain several entities. But every time the judgement below shows the length is 0. When I debug it, I see the code in onSuccess{} is always executed afterwards, after all subsequent code, so the variable items certainly isn't assigned before the judgement statement. Why? How can I control the the callback function's executing sequence to make the following judgement statement meaningful?

Word wrap option for all widgets

I need CSS {word-wrap: normal} property for every gadget and its part with text data.

For example, if a column in a grid has a long name (such as "first assigned status") but the data is 1 byte, I want to display the column title in 3 lines like

If there is a Text style option "Word Wrap" in the "Styles" tab of a grid design, it will be very convenient to do such customization.

Of course if I want to display long text (such as 100 bytes of text) in a column with 30 bytes width, this new option is quite useful.

Solved Slider - WAF-Error

since some days (?) I cannot use the slider widget. I can simply reproduce this issue with a newly created solution and only one slider widget on the page. The WAF throws following error in line 36703 of waf-optimizie:

German number input with comma

In the grid my number data was display in german style.
I have set the number format of the data cell to "###,###.00".
In german browsers he displays a number correct like this 123,56 (US-Browser displays 123.56)

If i want to input a number with comma (,) as decimal point, he ignore the rest of the Input:

Input 123,56 -> Displays 123

Only the point (.) as decimal point works:

Input 123.56 -> Displays 123,56

Is it possible to change this settings?
I think many No-US-Users need this.

Matrix onChildrenDraw event is not activated

According to forum, this bug has fixed from previous versions. But on the last production version, it does not activates during the load of form.

hi everyone,

As you can see below, this is a a Entity method belong to a Class Farmer

In the testing file, I initialized the entity farmer, and excuted

During the debugging, everything worked well except the

Unable to Create Project: Wakanda v 4.132351 & OSX 10.6

I am testing Wakanda v 4.132351 with OSX 10.6.8 for the first time. Trying to follow the start up guide.

Installing it from scratch, I have copied applications like this : /Applications/Wakanda Server.app
and /Applications/Wakanda Studio.app.

I am unable to create a New Project. Menu and icon stay grey.
This is a new installation I can't have done anything wrong, is this a bug or do I have forgot anything ?

One more, I can't open Wakanda Preferences. Nothing happens when I select the preferences menu.

For both case, I tried to erase ALL Wakanda Server and Studio files in ~/Library/Application Support and re-run, but observe no change.

In the explorer pane (or another pane), don't just list project files:

- have nodes for all of Wakanda's API's (and even for Javascript)
- list all available functions
- tooltips for everything summarizing node|function
- fast way to move selected function over to cursor position in code editor
- fast way to move example code for selected function over to cursor position in code editor

Say I forget how to select the next record. Instead of digging around in the docs I peruse the Wakanda api nodes...see "datasources"...see "selectNext"...see the tooltip for selectNext...say to myself: "lets try this one"...hit "move function over" -- and it's in my code.
